飛鳥座神社から南西に300ｍ。日本最古の大仏を持つ、日本最古の仏教寺院「飛鳥寺（=法興寺=元興寺）」に行く。今回の旅のキモとも言える場所なのだ。
「飛鳥座神社」を出て、さぁ車に乗ろうとすると、店は閉まっていたが「飛鳥鍋」なる見事なネーミングの看板が目に入った。

入り口は東門。
⊳1772年/明和9年
この地を訪れた本居宣長曰く、飛鳥寺は門などもなく、かりそめなる堂に本尊釈迦如来像が安置されるのみだったという。
⊳1792年/寛政4年
入口に立つ「飛鳥大仏」の石碑ができる
⊳1825年/文政8年
大坂の篤志家の援助で再建された今の本堂は、蘇我馬子の建てた法興寺中金堂の跡地だ。
本尊の釈迦如来像（飛鳥大仏）は補修が甚だしいとはいえ飛鳥時代と同じ場所に安居院（あんごいん）を建て安置された。

初老の男性が、たったひとりの私に対して丁寧に解説をしてくださり感激した。
そして「寺内のものはごゆっくり撮影なさってください」と声をかけていただき大変恐縮したものだ。
飛鳥大仏
この大仏の作者は「鞍作鳥」で法隆寺金堂本尊釈迦三尊像の作者である「司馬鞍首止利/しばくらつくりのおびととり と同一人物とみるのが定説。
彼の持ち味が、世に言うアルカイックスマイルと呼ばれているあの独特の仏さまの表情だ。
住職の熱いメッセージ↑は「まだまだ言いたいことはあるぞ」と言わんばかりだ。
飛鳥大仏の向かって右手には「木造 阿弥陀如来坐像／藤原時代」
向って左手には「木造 聖徳太子考養像 室町時代」
安居院を出て回廊に出ると中庭があり、そこにも数々の遺構がある。

廊下にあるショーケースにも宝物が展示されている 。

大黒天（左／鎌倉時代）
不動明王（右／室町時代）
外に出て、境内の西側にあるお堂が「思惟殿 しゆいでん」
本尊は
聖観世音菩薩
⊵思惟とは
左手の木には絵馬がぶら下げられている。
朝鮮半島から渡来した人たちが故郷を思い眺めた場所
境内には句碑が多く、その形態もさまざま。まずは昭和初期の俳人弓場汰有の句碑 
次は絵も手がけるだけあって個性的な書体、安江不空の句碑。 
「つみつくし～」の句碑の表には万葉集の324段と325段の句が書かれている。
飛鳥寺の長老であられた山本雨宝（震琴）師の句碑。 
また雨宝師は八雲琴の演奏者として国の無形文化財の指定を受けておられ、生涯長きにわたり八雲琴を保存伝承に尽力された。 
今までに撞いたどの鐘よりもいい音がしたと思う、境内の南西の方角にある「昭和の名鐘」と呼ばれている鐘楼。
「上は有頂天より、下は奈落の底まで、響けよかしと念じて一度」と書いてある。
入鹿の首塚に向かう西門のすぐ横にある地蔵尊。
このあたりから左手の鐘楼を見上げると、なにやら奇妙な動物が屋根に
